In the last decade aquaculture has had an important growth being the direct competitor of extractive fishing. It is estimated that for the year 2030 aquiculture will provide 62% of the production destined to human consumption. In recent years, the study of diseases and pathogens of commercial importance has intensified with the objective of controlling or eradicate these pathologies from the cultivated fish. Within the most cultivated species there are the Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and the Coho Salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch). These species are affected by diverse diseases among which we find the Bacterial cold water disease (BCWD). This disease characterizes itself for generating injuries and ulcers on the skin of the cultivated fish, which in severe state exposes internal organs resulting in the death of the infected subject. The agent responsible of BCWD is Flavobacterium psychrophilum (F. psychrophilum). Nowadays, only part of the infection mechanism is known, therefore, it seems important to develop more studies to define the process and progression of the disease to reduce the infection among the fish. A good research subject is the Zebrafish, which is small in size and grows rapidly. Moreover, It is versatile regarding the cellular and molecular structure it possesses. It has been utilized as a study subject for other important diseases in aquaculture. In this research the zebrafish was used as a test subject for the infection F. psychrophilum to evaluate the effect at a phenotypical and cellular level. As a result, we obtained a similar phenotype to the one described for BCWD in other species, along with the activation of the innate immune system when confronted with the bacteria. Consequently, the zebrafish is a good test subject for the infection F. psychrophilum, which could be of great relevance to stablish ways to control and eradicate this infectious organism.
