The purpose of this study was to explore if there is an association between time on hemodialysis treatment and the effect in the periodontal health status; since several studies indicate that chronic periodontitis may affect medical management of chronic renal disease. Due to contradictory studies, it is necessary to evaluate periodontally status on the hemodialyzed population in our country. 52 hemodialyzed patients and 25 controls were evaluated, the hemodialyzed patients were divided into two groups according to treatment time (for less than five years and more than five years), were evaluated in the same dialysis center, where periodontal index, probing depth and clinical attachment loss was determined. Results: Periodontal health status in evaluated patients show similar periodontal index values between groups on hemodialysis and control group, no significant differences were founded in comparison with the control group; therefore it cannot be established that this damage was caused by treatment length. But at the presence of periodontal disease in part of the study population is of utmost importance the absence of inflammatory focal points in these patients, because an untreated periodontal disease could jeopardize a transplant possibility.
