Resumen
The present work is a pre-experiment with a one-group pretest/posttest design on the use of two-object verbs, aiming to explore if providing explicit syntactic information to a group of intermediate/advanced students will have any effect on their linguistic performance on the use of these verbs. In gathering the background information on the topic, the syntactic analysis of two-object verbs and its pedagogical implications are examined, anda review is made of methodological approaches that favor the teaching of grammar in the classroom. Additionally, a view is given of the manner how two-object verbs are treated in sorne dictionaries and textbooks in current use, and the only available study on the topic, Peter Paul's article on trivalent verbs is examined. The provision of syntactic information to the students is carried out through a grammar lesson in the form of a consciousness-raising task. The following are the steps that the methodological design of this work contemplates: The first refers to the knowledge on two-object verbs that the group of students had prior to the consciousness-raising task. The second is the administration of the consciousness-raising task, which acts as the experimental stimulus (independent variable) of this research. The third is the knowledge on two-object verbs that the students had after the administration of the consciousness-raising task. The results of this pre-experiment demonstrate an improvement of the students in their performance on the use of two-object verbs. More importantly, given the low seores obtained by the students in the tests applied to them in the course of the study, it is shown that two-object verbs represent an area of majar difficulty for the students, and that more attention should be given to the teaching of this structure, as well as to the necessity of more reliable and accurate information on these verbs in dictionaries and textbooks.
