The article examines the relationship between monologue and testimony in contemporary theatre focusing on the analysis of the Chilean play Hilda Peña (2014) by Isidora Stevenson. For this purpose, in first place it explores the most relevant characteristics of testimony as a type of discourse and its problematic literary status, seen in critical approaches on Latin American narrative and Chilean theatre in recent decades. In this development, it looks particularly into its progressive fictionalization. Secondly, the paper places the significance of the monologue in current dramaturgies as a paradigmatic manifestation of an intimate theatre, closely related to the testimonial discourse. Elaborating on both theoretical assumptions, my analysis of Hilda Peña proposes the fictionalization of extratextual referent so as the, fictionalization of testimony through dramatic monologue. In our interpretation, we will understand the monologue as a discursive and reflexive strategy, and a constitutive locus of experience, in which the character testifies to himself in reality.
