El objetivo de este estudio es identificar las estrategias de lectura preferidas utilizadas tanto por alumnos hombres como mujeres de un curso ESP (English for Specific Purposes), en relaciĆ³n al gĆ©nero de los alumnos.
La investigaciĆ³n tuvo lugar en una universidad privada en la ciudad de ConcepciĆ³n, Chile.
El estudio considerĆ³ una muestra al azar de 23 alumnos, (12 mujeres y 11 hombres), cuyas edades iban desde los 19 a los 23 aƱos. Los alumnos parte de la muestra pertenecĆan a una carrera del Ć”rea de la salud en esta universidad.
En esta investigaciĆ³n un enfoque mixto fue utilizado, considerando un instrumento adaptado del inglĆ©s al espaƱol llamado āSurvey of Reading Strategies (SORS)ā por Mokhtari & Sheorey (2002). Y una entrevista conducida al profesor a cargo de este curso ESP, en funciĆ³n de recoger su perspectiva en relaciĆ³n al gĆ©nero de los alumnos y las estrategias de lectura usadas por ellos.
Los resultados hallados en esta investigaciĆ³n mostraron que no hay diferencias significativas en referencia a que si alumnos hombres y mujeres poseĆan un uso de estrategias de lectura diferentes. Ambos grupos mostraron una predominancia en el uso de estrategias de resoluciĆ³n de problemas. Sin embargo, sĆ se encontraron diferencias en relaciĆ³n a la frecuencia en el uso de estas estrategias de lectura y estrategias de lectura en general.
The aim of this study is to identify the preferred reading strategies both male and female students of an ESP course use. The research took place in a private university in the city of ConcepciĆ³n, Chile. The research considered a randomized sample of 23 students, (12 females and 11 males), all ranging from the ages 19 to 23 years old. The students of this sample belonged to a health related major in this university. In this research, a mixed method approach was used, considering an instrument adapted from English to Spanish called āSurvey of Reading Strategies (SORS)ā by Mokhtari & Sheorey (2002). And an interview conducted to the teacher in charge of this ESP course, in order to get her perspective in relation to the possible connection between gender and the use of reading strategies by the students. The results found in this research showed that there were no major differences between the use of reading strategies and the studentsā gender. Both groups, male and female students, showed predominance in the use of Problem-solving strategies. However, there were differences in relation to the frequency in the use of the previous reading strategies and reading strategies overall.
