In today's uncertain business environment, there is an understandable pressure to improve how projects are managed in regards of time and cost. The Earned Value is a program management valuable technique that integrates technical performance requirements, cost and schedule, while at the same time taking into consideration de risks involved. Earned Value Management has proven to be a tremendous aid in project planning, tracking and decision making. Earned Value provides accurate performance data early in the project's life cycle. Such data can be used to both asses the current status of projects, taking corrective actions when necessary as well as to predict the project's final cost and duration at completion. The objective of this thesis is to present a state of the art of the concept of Earned Value including its limitations and benefits. This study will analyse further developments to the Earned Value theory and present methodologies aimed to expand current capabilities. Finally, it will also analyse the different barriers and also aspects that need to be taken into consideration for a successful implementation of Earned Value analysis. This thesis introduces a concept rarely used in Chile and a more effective way to manage cost and schedule for a construction project.
