SIMCE tests are the instruments with which the government measures students’ learning progress across the country. English proficiency is measured in eleventh grade, and the results are used by the Chilean Ministry of Education MINEDUC to design public policies. This study explores the extent and nature of the washback effect the English SIMCE test has on teachers’ teaching practices and affects. A qualitative approach was used to allow for a better understanding of the impact of the test on the participants’ affect and teaching dynamics. The study concludes that teachers’ teaching practices and feelings are affected or modified positively and negatively due to the application of the test. This article finishes by reflecting on the applications of its findings in the Chilean context.El Sistema de Medición de Calidad de la Educación SIMCE es una batería de pruebas de alto impacto (high-stakes test) rendida por los estudiantes chilenos. Con este instrumento, el gobierno mide el progreso del aprendizaje de los estudiantes en el país. El dominio del inglés se mide en tercer año de enseñanza media, y los resultados son usados por el Ministerio de Educación (MINEDUC) para diseñar políticas públicas. El presente estudio explora de qué manera el efecto de washback inherente a la prueba SIMCE de inglés afecta a profesores de inglés en cuanto a sus prácticas educativas y emociones. Para este fin, se usó un enfoque cualitativo, el cual permitió comprender mejor el impacto que tiene la prueba SIMCE de inglés sobre las emociones y prácticas educativas de los participantes. El estudio concluyó que la aplicación de la prueba afectó ambos aspectos en los profesores de forma tanto positiva como negativa.
