Soft tissue injuries have a major impact on clĆnica! practice, among them the ankle sprain. lt is the most common with the injury of the lateral ligament complex which produces pain and functional limitation. Cryotheraphy is one of the conservative treatments far the control of Ćnflammation and edema, but thereĀ·s no evĆdence of the direct action of cryotheraphy on the pain threshold. The goal of this study is to determĆnate the effect of the application of cryotheraphy on the paĆn threshold in healthy subjects. 30 volunteers wĆll partĆcipate in this quasĆ-experimental study with exploratory design. The pain threshold was measured in all the volunteers with the application of pressure algometer, after that they were dĆvided randomly in three groups: control group, conduction cryotherapy and convection cryotheraphy, with a treatment time of 1 o minutes. The pain threshold was measured again, immediately, 1 O, 20 and 30 minutes after the treatment period to reveal any changes in the threshold. The pain threshold increased in both groups, convection and conduction, immediately after the treatment period. These results were statistically significant. The use of cryotheraphy, conduction or convection, increases the pain threshold after 10 minutes of application. Further research is needed to demonstrate a longer duration of this effect.
