This means a relevant effort to comply with the current accreditation criteria, being the teachers evaluated with respect to their level of academic production. The objective of the present study was to know the perception of teachers of the specialization programs of dental schools of Santiago, Chile, on the current requirements of academic production. Material and methods: An exploratory qualitative study was performed, through an active interview with a flexible script, to 18 teachers of dental specialties representative of the national reality. The data was processed by qualitative software and an analysis of descriptive content was carried out. Results: The main narratives of the perception of teachers about the assessment of the different production indicators and the factors that modify their fulfillment were identified. The most relevant indicators were those related to clinical and teaching experience, emphasizing the clinical and practical nature of their programs. The main obstacle to the fulfillment of academic production was the lack of protected time for scientific research. Conclusion: It is necessary to evaluate the suitability of the current criteria of academic production with respect to the specific characteristics of dental specialty programs. At the institutional level it is necessary to implement strategies that establish protected times for the development of scientific production.
