The purpose of this research is to analyze the storytelling activity as a strategy to increase oral communication in primary education. The research approach is a phenomenology since it seeks to understand personal experiences about this activity and opinions of people that perform as storytellers. The investigation has been carried out starting from a qualitative research based on interviews to oral narrators and analysis of government documents such as curricular bases and curriculum design. Having the results it could be concluded that the storytelling is not well known in Chile and that it requires difusion. Besides, it could be seen that in spite of the presence of the storytelling activity in the Spanish Language Curriculum, it occupies a small space in it, thus, more oportunities for children to know this activity are required. This research is intended to contribute as a base investigation to further analysis about strategies to encourage teachers and students’ oral narration and thus promote oral communication in Language programs by applying storytelling activities in the classroom, whether inviting profesional storytellers and providing tools so as to help teachers or students to become storytellers.
