Ítem Vocabulary Acquisition through Static and Dynamic Multimodal Glosses in University Students Learning English as a Second Language.(Universidad Andrés Bello, 2013) Baeza Vergara, Nadia; Farfán Troncoso, Francisco; Monardes Órdenes, Karolina; Yávar Sandoval, Daniela; Silva Torres, Roberto; Facultad de Educación y Ciencias SocialesLearning vocabulary is one of the most important aspects to consider when learning a second language. There are ways to acquire unknown words and one of them is the use of dictionaries; however this method is not so effective for reading comprehension, because it may disrupt learners' reading. With the inclusion of technology to the classrooms, multimodal glosses were included as new methodology of vocabulary learning. The present research examines the same studies as Chun and Plass and AISeghayer, whose goals were to find out which multimodal gloss (static information and dynamic information) were more efficient for vocabulary acquisition. The purpose of the study is to compare which of the both types of information stated above is more efficient for learning unknown words. Three groups of university students between 18 to 32 years old were confronted to multimodal glosses in a computer room. The glosses presented were text only, image plus text and videos (gifs) plus text. Each group had access to one of the multimodal glosses in order to find which were more efficient for vocabulary acquisition. Finally, the results indicated that the inclusion of these multimodal glosses were effective for learning the target words. However, the group that had access to text and static image performed better than the other two groups.
