Accident Risk Detection in Urban Trees using Machine Learning and Fuzzy Logic
    (Elsevier, 2022) Ramírez, G.; Salazar, K.; Barria, V.; Pinto, O.; San Martin, L.; Carrasco, R.; Fuentealba, D.; Gatica, G.
Knowing the state of trees and their associated risks contribute to the care of the population. Machine Learning, through supervised learning, has demonstrated its effectiveness in various areas of knowledge. The risk of accidents can be predicted by having different tree data, including height, species, condition, presence of pests, the area where it is planted, climatic events, and age. This work proposes a platform to register trees and predict their risk. The solution considers integrating technology and applications for those in charge of maintenance and changes in current procedures. The risk prediction process is carried out through a fuzzification process that contributes to the responsible entities’ decision-making. Preliminary results of this research are presented, and the capacity of the developed software architecture is demonstrated, where the scalability of the prediction algorithm stands out.

Influence of strategic interrelationships and decision-making in chilean port networks on their degree of sustainability
    (MDPI AG, 2021-04) Durán, C.; Palominos, F.; Carrasco, R.; Carrillo, E.
An extensive literary review is carried out to determine the strategic and business advantages, and difficulties that non-smart ports must face to develop sustainability. Based on a two-port case study, the strategic text of the corporate missions of port administrators and operators is analyzed and classified in order to understand to what extend economic, social and environmental aspects are fulfilled. A conceptual model is designed for an information system based on indicators that can determine the state or degree of sustainability in the critical operational activities of the ports studied. A system is proposed that is based on a data warehouse core and a multidimensional database, which can be implemented in the Relational On-Line Analytical Processing (ROLAP) mode, allowing taking advantage of the good characteristics of relational databases without losing the On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP) approach. A discussion of the strategic feasibility of implementing this conceptual model of case study monitoring and its long-term benefits is delivered. The conclusions state that the development of this green technology requires cultural changes, public policy initiatives and the incorporation of new actors. In addition, more research is needed in this area to identify other relevant sustainable variables. © 2021 by the authors.

Nanosensors for a Monitoring System in Intelligent and Active Packaging
    (HINDAWI PUBLISHING CORP, 2016) Fuertes, G.; Soto, I.; Vargas, M.; Valencia, A.; Sabattin, J.; Carrasco, R.
A theoretical wireless nanosensor network (WNSN) system that gives information about the food packaging condition is proposed. The protection effectiveness is estimated by measuring many factors, such as the existence of microorganisms, bacteria, gases, and contaminants. This study is focused on the detection of an antimicrobial agent (AA) attached on a polymer forming an active integrated package. All monitoring technologies for food conservation are analyzed. Nanobiosensor nanomachine (NM), which converts biological or chemical signals into electrical signals, is used. A mathematical model, which describes the constituent's emigration from the package to food, is programmed in Mat Lab software. The results show three nanobiosensors forming a WNSN. The nanobiosensors are able to carry out the average concentration for different spots in the package. This monitoring system shows reading percentages in three degrees and different colors: excellent (green), good (cyan), and lacking (red). To confirm the utility of the model, different simulations are performed. Using the WNSNs, results of AA existing in food package (FP) through time were successfully obtained.

Overuse of health care in the emergency services in Chile
    (MDPI AG, 2021-03) Alvial, X.; Rojas, A.; Carrasco, R.; Durán, C.; Fernández-Campusano, C.
The Public Health Service in Chile consists of different levels of complexity and coverage depending on the severity and degree of specialization of the pathology to be treated. From primary to tertiary care, tertiary care is highly complex and has low coverage. This work focuses on an analysis of the public health system with emphasis on the healthcare network and tertiary care, whose objectives are designed to respond to the needs of each patient. A review of the literature and a field study of the problem of studying the perception of internal and external users is presented. This study intends to be a contribution in the detection of opportunities for the relevant actors and the processes involved through the performance of Triage. The main causes and limitations of the excessive use of emergency services in Chile are analyzed and concrete proposals are generated aiming to benefit clinical care in emergency services. Finally, improvements related to management are proposed and the main aspects are determined to improve decision-making in hospitals, which could be a contribution to public health policies. © 2021 by the authors.
