Ítem The effects of storytelling and the home literacy environment on EFL learning at the playgroup level. A case study(Universidad Andrés Bello, 2018) Widow Ruiz, Teresa María; Charbonnneau-Gowdy, Paula; Facultad de Educación y Ciencias Sociales; Programa de Magíster en la Enseñanza del Inglés como Lengua ExtranjeraThe present investigation aims at exploring, through the lens of Socio-Cultural Theory (Vygotsky, 1978, 1986), the nature of the reading habits of a small group of playgroup level learners, and the way in which storytelling, as a receptive and creative activity, as well as their Home Literacy Environment are related with these young learners' acquisition, willingness, participation and creativity regarding learning English as a second language. The participants in this study were 10 playgroup students in a private school in Chile and their parents. The tools used to collect data were class feedback, unstructured interviews, a questionnaire, a focus group and a reflective observational journal kept by the teacher-researcher. The period of the study began in August and ended in December of 2018, with the collection of data having a length of five weeks during September and October. The data gathered was analyzed inductively. The main findings reveal storytelling as a positive activity to promote emergent literacy and engage very young learners in L2 learning. The study supports growing scholarship that establishes storytelling, together with the conjunction of families and schools, as powerful tools for children’s learning and education.
