Teaching EFL by means of a Student-Centered Approach: An experimental Study
(Universidad Andrés Bello, 2013) Coello, Lucía; D'ardaillon, Michelle; Díaz, Valentina; León, Ingar; Roca, Natalia; Sinclair, María Eugenia; Orrego, Roxana; Facultad de Humanidades y Educación
The research consisted of selecting two different schools. The two of them recognized as one Private and Subsidized; both located in Santiago the Chile. This study was looking forward to gather information and results of the implementation of a methodology called "Student-Centered Approach." This approach has been used for severa! developed countries to achieve excellence in education and that is why the objective of this study was to prove the possibility and non-possibility of inserting it into the Chilean educational system. Two eighth grades-with a quantity of students not less than fifteen nor exceeding- thirty-were divided into halfs. These eighth graders took different roles; the group in charge of the teacher hired by the school was called the control group while the group in charge of the researchers involved was the experimental group that were the ones that yield final results. lt should be noted that the intervention lasted one month in which, four interventions were applied. One intervention per week and immediately comments and results were extracted. lt should be highlighted, that a pre-test was applied before the experiment started. At the end of the student's month intervention, a post-test was-done to validate the effectiveness of this new methodology which turned out to be positively. The students also answered an anonymous questionnaire in which they were able to comment on the experience they had during the thirty one days. lt needs to be remarked that this questionnaire was done only to the experimental group.
