Ítem Diagnóstico integral en pacientes obesos mórbidos candidatos a cirugía bariátrica y sugerencias para su tratamiento preoperatorio(Universidad Nacional de Colombia, 2017-08) Cofré-Lizama, A.; Delgado-Floody, P.A.; Saldivia-Mansilla, C.; Jerez-Mayorga, D.Objetivo El propósito del estudio fue analizar y describir las características psicológicas, metabólicas, antropométricas y de condición física de obesos candidatos a cirugía bariátrica, para determinar la intervención preoperatoria. Material y Métodos La población está conformada por 24 obesos candidatos a cirugía bariátrica; cinco hombres y 19 mujeres entre 21 y 60 años. La muestra es de tipo no-probabilística, con sujetos elegidos de manera no aleatoria por conveniencia y voluntarios. Se evaluaron variables psicológicas, antropométricas, metabólicas y de condición física. Resultados La edad promedio de los participantes corresponde a 41,0 años. En el estudio se evidencian bajos niveles en alegría empática. Los síntomas ansiosos presentaron un nivel medio: El 62,5 % presentó depresión mínima, el 29,1 % depresión leve, y el 8,4 % depresión modera. El peso corporal tuvo un promedio de 99,1 kilogramos, la talla de 1,6 metros, el Índice de Masa Coporal (IMC) de 39,3, el porcentaje de masa grasa un promedio de 41,1 y el contorno cintura de 118,0 centímetros. Con respecto a los valores plasmáticos (mg/dl) se obtuvo: colesterol total 192,9, colesterol LDL 120,0, colesterol HDL 43,3, triglicéridos 182,3, Glicemia a 105,9; y la distancia recorrida en seis minutos fue de 511,9 metros. Conclusiones Los resultados aportan información para determinar mejores estrategias de intervención preoperatorias, cambiando así los estilos de vida de los pacientes; logrando que la pérdida de peso post operatoria se sostenga en el tiempo.Ítem Efecto de 8 semanas de corriente TENS modificada y la corriente rusa, sobre la fuerza muscular y la composición corporal(Elsevier Doyma, 2016-03) Campos-Jara, C.; Martínez-Salazar, C.; Carrasco-Alarcón, V.; Arcay-Montoya, R.; Ramírez-Campillo, R.; Mariscal-Arcas, M.; Jerez-Mayorga, D.; Da Silva-Grigoletto, M.E.Objetivo: Comparar el efecto de 2 métodos de electroestimulación en las siguientes variables: fuerza y antropometría. Método: Se realizó una investigación experimental, aleatoria y simple ciego. Se evaluó a 18 sujetos, distribuidos en: Grupo Corriente TENS Modificada (CTM: n = 6), Grupo Corriente Rusa (CR: n = 6) y Grupo Control (TC: n = 6, sometido a corriente TENS Convencional, considerada en la presente investigación como placebo). Resultados: Al cabo de 8 semanas, solo CTM incrementó la fuerza máxima (p < 0.035) y redujo el grosor del pliegue subcutáneo de la pierna derecha (p < 0.03). Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of 16-weeks of HIIT on body composition, BP, cardiorespiratory fitness by (Formula presented.) O2max, and substrate utilization during exercise among prehypertensive and hypertensive patients with excessive adiposity. We also aimed to test the potential association between changes in cardiorespiratory fitness, substrate utilization during exercise and BP. Forty-two physically inactive overweight/obese participants participated in 16-weeks of HIIT intervention. The HIIT frequency was three times a week (work ratio 1:2:10, for interval cycling: rest period: repeated times; 80–100% of the maximum heart rate). Groups were distributed based on their baseline BP: HIIT-hypertensive (H-HTN: age 47.7 ± 12.0 years; body mass index [BMI] 30.3 ± 5.5 kg/m2; systolic [SBP]/diastolic BP [DBP] 151.6 ± 10/81.9 ± 4.2 mmHg), HIIT-pre-hypertensive (H-PreHTN: age 37.6 ± 12.0 years; BMI 31.9 ± 5.3 kg/m2; SBP/DBP 134.4 ± 3.2/74.9 ± 7.0 mmHg), and a normotensive control group (H-CG: age 40.7 ± 11.0 years; BMI 29.5 ± 4.2 kg/m2; SBP/DBP 117.0 ± 6.2/72.4 ± 4.1 mmHg). Anthropometry/body composition, BP, and metabolic substrate utilization during exercise (fat [FATox], carbohydrate [CHOox] oxidation, respiratory exchange ratio [RER], and (Formula presented.) O2max), were measured before and after the 16-week HIIT intervention. Adjusted mixed linear models revealed a significant improved in (Formula presented.) O2max were + 3.34 in the H-CG, + 3.63 in the H-PreHTN, and + 5.92 mL⋅kg–1⋅min–1, in the H-HTN group, however, the Time × Group interaction were not significant (p = 0.083). All the exercise types induced similar decreases on SBP (−8.70) in the H-HTN, (−7.14) in the H-CG, and (−5.11) mmHg in the H-PreHTN, as well as DBP levels (−5.43) mmHg in H-CG group (p = 0.032 vs. H-HTN group). At 16-week, no significant correlations were noted for the changes of blood pressure, cardiorespiratory fitness or exercise metabolism substrates outcomes. In conclusion, our results suggest that a 16-week HIIT-intervention improved (Formula presented.) Results derived from such research may allow important practical applications. Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the effects of 4-weeks of TRT versus PJT programs on the muscular fitness of sedentary and physically inactive participants. Methods: Baseline and follow-up tests included the assessment of Squat Jump (SJ), Countermovement Jump (CMJ), elastic index, and maximal strength of the knee extensors (MVS). Males and females (age range, 18-29 years) were randomly assorted into a control group (CG, n=11), TRT (n=8), and PJT groups (n=9). The TRT program emphasized slow-speed movements with free weights. The PJT program emphasized high-speed jump movements without external loads. Both TRT and PJT sessions lasted 30-minutes. Dependent variables were analyzed in separate three (Groups) × two (Time: pre, post) ANOVA, with Bonferroni-adjusted α (p<0.05). Results: Main effects of time (all p<0.05) were observed for SJ (ηp 2 = 0.51), CMJ (ηp 2 = 0.33), and MVS (ηp 2 = 0.33). Post-hoc analyses revealed similar significant (all p<0.05) improvements in the TRT and PJT groups for SJ (∆, 95%CL, 9.0-22.5%), CMJ (∆, 95%CL, 11.7-24.4%), and MVS (∆, 95%CL, 5.8-21.3%). No significant changes were observed in the control group. No changes were observed for the elastic index. Hypertension (HTN) is recognized as a significant public health problem in the world. The objective of this study is to evaluate emergent anthropometric indices as predictors of preHTN and HTN according to age and sex in a sample of Mexican adults. Methods. A cross-sectional study was conducted in 1,150 participants aged 18-80 years old. Anthropometric data and blood pressure measurements were analyzed. Comparisons between men and women were carried out by independent analysis. Cutoff points for each emergent anthropometric index were obtained using the values' upper second and third tertiles. Logistic regression models and receiver operating characteristics curve analyses were used to assess the association and the predictive value of several emergent anthropometric indices with the presence of preHTN and HTN. Results. The prevalence of preHTN and HTN was 29.74% and 14.35%, respectively. In a logistic regression analysis adjusted by age and sex, the body roundness index (BRI) (OR = 2.08, p<0.001) and conicity index (CI) (OR = 1.37, p=0.044) were associated with preHTN, while CI (OR = 2.47, p<0.001) and waist to height squared (W/Ht2) (OR = 2.19, p[removed]40 years old, the predictor indices were W/Ht3 and W/Ht2. In women ≤40 years, the pulse mass index (PMI) was the best main predictor (AUC = 0.909) of HTN. Conclusion. CI, PMI, W/Ht3, W/Ht2, and ABSI could represent differential predictors of preHTN and HTN between men and women according to age range.Ítem Exploring lower limb muscle activity and performance variations during instrumented Sit-to-Stand-to-Sit in sedentary individuals: Influence of limb dominance and testing modalities(Elsevier, 2027-09) Torres-Banduc, M.; Jerez-Mayorga, D.; Chirosa-Ríos, L.; Chirosa-Ríos, I.Purpose to explore lower limb muscle activity concerning limb dominance, as well as variations in force and power during the standing up and sitting down phases of the instrumented sit-to-stand-to-sit test in sedentary individuals, across isokinetic and isotonic modalities. Methods 33 sedentary individuals underwent testing using a functional electromechanical dynamometer in both isokinetic and isotonic modes, accompanied by surface electromyography. Results In the isokinetic mode, the non-dominant gastrocnemius medialis and vastus medialis exhibited significantly (p < 0.05) higher muscle activity values during the standing up and sitting down phase compared to dominant counterparts. In the isotonic mode standing up phase, significant differences in muscle activity were noted for non-dominant gastrocnemius medialis, vastus medialis, and biceps femoris compared to their dominant counterparts. The sitting down phase in isotonic mode showed higher muscle activity for non-dominant vastus medialis compared to dominant vastus medialis. Regard to performance outcomes, significantly lower (p < 0.0001) values were observed for standing up (12.7 ± 5.1 N/kg) compared to sitting down (15.9 ± 6.1 N/kg) peak force, as well as for standing up (18.7 ± 7.8 W/kg) compared to sitting down (25.9 ± 9.7 W/kg) peak power in isokinetic mode. In isotonic mode, lower values were found for sitting down (6.5 (6.3–7.1) N/kg) compared to standing up (7.8 (7.3–8.9) N/kg) peak force and for sitting down (18.5 (13.2–21.7) W/kg) compared to standing up (33.7 (22.8–41.6) W/kg) peak power. Conclusions Limb dominance influences lower-limb muscle activity during the instrumented sit-to-stand-to-sit test, and the choice of testing mode (isokinetic or isotonic) affects muscle engagement and performance outcomes.Ítem Instrumental validity and intra/inter-rater reliability of a novel low-cost digital pressure algometer(PeerJ Inc, 2020-10) Jerez-Mayorga, D.; dos Anjos, C.F.; de Cássia Macedo, M.; Fernandes, I.G.; Aedo-Muñoz, E.; Intelangelo, L.; Barbosa, A.C.Background: Pain assessment is a key measure that accompanies treatments in a wide range of clinical settings. A low-cost valid and reliable pressure algometer would allow objective assessment of pressure pain to assist a variety of health professionals. However, the pressure algometer is often expensive, which limits its daily use in both clinical and research settings. Objectives: This study aimed to assess the instrumental validity, and the intraand inter-rater reliability of an inexpensive digital adapted pressure algometer. Methods: A single rater applied 60 random compressions on a force platform. The pressure pain thresholds of 20 volunteers were collected twice (3 days apart) by two raters. The main outcome measurements were as follows: The maximal peak force (in kPa) and the pressure pain threshold (adapted pressure algometer vs. force platform). Cronbach's a test was used to assess internal consistency. The standard error of measurement provided estimates of measurement error, and the measurement bias was estimated with the Bland-Altman method, with lower and upper limits of agreement. Results: No differences were observed when comparing the compression results (P = 0.51). The validity and internal intra-rater consistencies ranged from 0.84 to 0.99, and the standard error of measurement from 0.005 to 0.04 kPa. Very strong (r = 0.73-0.74) to near-perfect (r = 0.99) correlations were found, with a low risk of bias for all measurements. The results demonstrated the validity and intra-rater reliability of the digitally adapted pressure algometer. Inter-rater reliability results were moderate (r = 0.55-0.60; Cronbach's a = 0.71-0.75). Conclusion: The adapted pressure algometer provide valid and reliable measurements of pressure pain threshold. The results support more widespread use of the pressure pain threshold method among clinicians. © 2020 Jerez-Mayorga et al.Ítem Intervención integral de ocho meses disminuye el peso y mejora los niveles de depresión y ansiedad en obesos severos y mórbidos(Universidad Nacional de Colombia, 2017) Cofre-Lizama, A.; Delgado-Floody, P.; Angulo-Díaz, P.; Jerez-Mayorga, D.Introduction: Morbid obesity generates a considerable decrease in expectations and quality of life, which causes increased levels of depression and anxiety. Objective: The purpose of this research was to determine the effects of a comprehensive treatment program on weight loss and anxiety and depression levels of severe and morbid obese patients. Materials and methods: 4 men and 12 women with an average age of 34.0±26.0 years, and candidates for bariatric surgery were included in this study. 6 severe obese and 10 morbidly obese patients participated in a comprehensive eight-month treatment intervention. The following conditions were assessed pre- and post-intervention: weight, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, cardiorespiratory capacity, anxiety and depression. Results: Postoperative weight and BMI decreased significantly (p< 0.001) by 12.28% and 12.30%, respectively, while waist circumference decreased by 11.67% (p< 0.001). In addition, respiratory capacity improved significantly (p< 0.001), and anxiety and depressive symptoms decreased significantly (p< 0.001). Conclusion: The comprehensive eight-month intervention had significant benefits for participants in weight loss and improved levels of anxiety and depression. For this reason, the intervention performed may be recommended for the treatment of this condition.Ítem Obesidad, autoestima y condición física en escolares(Universidad Nacional de Colombia, 2017) Delgado-Floody, P.; Caamaño-Navarrete, F.; Jerez-Mayorga, D.; Cofré-Lizama, A.; Osorio-Poblete, A.; Campos-Jara, C.; Guzmán-Guzmán, I.; Martínez-Salazar, C.; Carcamo-Oyarzun, J.Introduction: Childhood obesity is a serious public health issue, since it generates adverse results for physical and mental health. Objective: To correlate nutritional status and levels of self-esteem and physical performance in schoolchildren aged between 8 and 10. Materials and methods: 236 students participated, 117 male and 119 female, aged between 8 and 10, from two public schools in the municipality of Temuco. Weight, height, body mass index, mass/ fat percentage, waist contour, physical condition, hours of physical exercise per week and self-esteem were evaluated. Results: Overnutrition was documented in 43.6% of the students; children classified as obese (19%) presented higher levels of fat mass and waist contour (p<0.001), and also had a lower physical performance (p<0.05). The hours of physical exercise per week and the level of self-esteem were lower in obese school children, although this figure was not significant (p≥0.05). Conclusions: Obesity in school-aged children reveals alterations associated with physical performance, fat mass and negative trends on self-esteem. Despite developing at an early stage, the consequences associated with this condition can already be seen.Ítem Poor sleep quality decreases concurrent training benefits in markers of metabolic syndrome and quality of life of morbidly obese patients(MDPI AG, 2020-09) Delgado-Floody, P.; Latorre-Roman, P.A.; Jerez-Mayorga, D.; Caamano-Navarrete, F.; Cano-Montoya, J.; Laredo-Aguilera, J.A.; Carmona-Torres, J.M.; Cobo-Cuenca, A.I.; Pozuelo-Carrascosa, D.P.; Alvarez, C.Background: Sleep quality (SQ) plays a role in multiple activities of daily living, but little is known about its role in concurrent training [CT, high-intensity interval (HIIT) plus resistance training (RT)] adaptations for metabolic syndrome (MetS) and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) markers. The aim of the present study was to determine the effects of a 20-week CT programme on MetS and HRQoL markers according to the SQ of morbidly obese patients. Methods: Twenty-nine morbidly obese patients were allocated to one of two groups: good sleep quality (GSQ, n = 15, 38.07 ± 12.26 years) and poor sleep quality (PSQ, n = 14, 40.79 ± 11.62 years). HRQoL, body mass index, waist circumference (WC), systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP, respectively), and plasma outcomes were measured. Results: The GSQ group reported significant changes (pre-vs. post-intervention) in WC (114.0 ± 3.1 vs. 110.4 ± 3.4 cm, p = 0.012), SBP (137.0 ± 4.3 vs. 125.6 ± 1.8 mmHg, p = 0.006), and HRQoL general health (51.33 ± 21.08 vs. 64.33 ± 16.24, p = 0.020). By contrast, the PSQ group showed significant changes only in SQ (9.00 ± 2.42 vs. 5.36 ± 2.84, p = 0.004). Conclusions: Morbidly obese PSQ patients showed a lower response for improving MetS and HRQoL markers after a 20-week CT programme than GSQ peers. However, there was a greater effect size for decreasing WC and SBP in favour of the GSQ compared with the PSQ group, suggesting that there are limitations to CT benefits on these outcomes in the PSQ group. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to determine lifestyle changes, such as eating habits and physical activity (PA) patterns, caused by confinement during the COVID-19 pandemic and to analyze its association with changes in body weight. Seven hundred participants (women, n = 528 and men, n = 172) aged between 18–62 years old of the Chilean national territory participated in the study. Food habits, PA, body weight, and sociodemographic variables were measured through a survey in May and June 2020. The body weight increase presented positive association with the consumption of fried foods ≥ 3 times per week (OR; 3.36, p < 0.001), low water consumption (OR; 1.58, p = 0.03), and sedentary time ≥6 h/day (OR; 1.85, p = 0.01). Conversely, fish consumed (OR; 0.67, p = 0.03), active breaks (OR; 0.72, p = 0.04), and PA ≥ 4 times per week (OR; 0.51, p = 0.001) presented an inverse association with body weight increase. Daily alcohol consumption (OR; 4.77, p = 0.003) was associated with PA decrease. food habits, PA, and active breaks may be protective factors for weight increase during COVID-19 confinement. © 2020 by the authors. Research question What is the correlation between muscle oscillation frequency and lower limb muscle strength, power, and work during an instrumented sit-to-stand and stand-to- sit (iSTS-TS) task among sedentary subjects? Methods In a cross-sectional study, the oscillation frequency of the gastrocnemius medialis (GM), biceps femoralis (BF), and vastus medialis (VM) muscles in both the dominant (D) and non-dominant (ND) legs was assessed with a handheld myotonometer in 34 sedentary individuals before performing the iSTS-TS task. Results In the isokinetic mode, no significant correlations were found. In the isotonic mode, the BF muscle oscillation frequency in the D and ND legs exhibited significant positive correlations with peak force, peak power, and work during sitting down, as well as peak power and work during standing up. Positive correlations were observed in both legs between the GM oscillation frequency and sitting down peak force and work. Additionally, significant positive correlation was found with standing up work in the D leg. Muscle oscillation frequency of the VM exhibited a positive correlation with sitting down peak force in the ND leg. Significance Due to a greater number of correlations found, it is advisable to use the isotonic mode when assessing muscle oscillation frequency in relation to muscle performance during functional iSTS-TS tasks in sedentary subjects.Ítem Reliability of a standing isokinetic shoulder rotators strength test using a functional electromechanical dynamometer: Effects of velocity(PeerJ Inc., 2020-10) Martinez-Garcia, D.; Rodriguez-Perea, A.; Barboza, P.; Ulloa-Díaz, D.; Jerez-Mayorga, D.; Chirosa, I.; Ríos, L.J.C.Background. The evaluation of the force in internal rotation (IR) and external rotation (ER) of the shoulder is commonly used to diagnose possible pathologies or disorders in the glenohumeral joint and to assess patient's status and progression over time. Currently, there is new technology of multiple joint isokinetic dynamometry that allows to evaluate the strength in the human being. The main purpose of this study was to determine the absolute and relative reliability of concentric and eccentric internal and external shoulder rotators with a functional electromechanical dynamometer (FEMD). Methods. Thirty-two male individuals (21.46±2.1 years) were examined of concentric and eccentric strength of shoulder internal and external rotation with a FEMD at velocities of 0.3 m s-1and 0.6 m s-1. Relative reliability was determined by intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC). Absolute reliability was quantified by standard error of measurement (SEM) and coefficient of variation (CV). Systematic differences across velocities testing circumstances, were analyzed with dependent t tests or repeatedmeasures analysis of variance in case of two or more than two conditions, respectively. Results. Reliability was high to excellent for IR and ER on concentric and eccentric strength measurements, regardless of velocity used (ICC: 0.81-0.98, CV: 5.12-8.27% SEM: 4.06-15.04N). Concentric outcomes were more reliable than eccentric due to the possible familiarization of the population with the different stimuli. Conclusion. All procedures examined showed high to excellent reliability for clinical use. However, a velocity of 0.60 m s-1should be recommended for asymptomatic male patients because it demands less time for evaluation and patients find it more comfortable. © 2020 PeerJ Inc.. The muscle strength can be measured using different dynamometers and be evaluated in three positions (side-lying, standing, and supine). Obtained strength data can be expressed in different ways, with data normalization providing more objective and comparable results. The aim of this study was to establish the validity and reliability of three protocols in evaluating the isometric strength of the hip abductor muscles. A new functional electromechanical dynamometer assessed strength in three positions, with findings subjected to three data normalization methods. In two identical sessions, the hip abductor strengths of 29 subjects were recorded in the side-lying, standing, and supine positions. Peak force was recorded in absolute terms and normalized against body mass, fat-free mass, and an allometric technique. The peak force recorded in the side-lying position was 30% and 27% higher than in the standing and supine positions, respectively, independent of data normalization methodology. High inter-protocol correlations were found (r: 0.72 to 0.98, p 0.001). The supine position with allometric data normalization had the highest test-retest reliability (0.94 intraclass correlation coefficient and 5.64% coefficient of variation). In contrast, the side-lying position with body mass data normalization had a 0.66 intraclass correlation coefficient and 9.8% coefficient of variation. In conclusion, the functional electromechanical dynamometer is a valid device for measuring isometric strength in the hip abductor muscles. The three assessed positions are reliable, although the supine position with allometric data normalization provided the best results. © 2018 Cerda Vega et al.
