Ítem English language teaching in Chile and the perception of english for specific purposes as an alternative program to improve learning results : a descriptive study(Universidad Andrés Bello, 2011) Catalán, Alan; Lizasoain, Gonzalo; Muñoz, David; Painemilla, Roxana; Facultad de Humanidades y Educación.For the last decade, the Chilean government has been making efforts to improve the mastery of English achieved through the teaching-learning process of the subject at both primary and high school levels. Regardless of the efforts deployed, the results are far from satisfactory and great emphasis is being placed on finding methodologies and means to overcome this drawback. In answer to this issue, it is the aim of the present research to determine whether the different elements that make up the high school system in Chile would allow the incorporation of English for Specific Purposes in the classroom. To gather the information required, an exhaustive literature review was made to assess the status quo of English Language Teaching (EL T) in Chile and to define the requirements for the implementation of an ESP syllabus. In addition, the affective factors shown by the stakeholders in relation to ESP were assessed. A survey was performed in 5 schools representative of the Chilean reality. Based on the economical, managerial, infrastructural, governmental, instructional, and affective aspects studied, it was possible to determine that the Chilean education has the necessary conditions to improve the levels of teaching and learning English through the implementation of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) programs as an alternative and experimental method.
