Ítem A Bifactor Model of Subjective Well-Being at Personal, Community, and Country Levels: A Case With Three Latin-American Countries(Frontiers Media S.A., 2021-06) Torres Vallejos, Javier; Juarros Basterretxea, Joel; Oyanedel, Juan Carlos; Sato, MasatoshiImproving citizens' subjective well-being (SWB) has become an increasingly visible policy goal across industrialized countries. Although an increasing number of studies have investigated SWB at the individual level, little is known about subjective evaluation at social levels, such as the community and national levels. While the relationships between these levels have been analyzed in previous research, these assessments, which are part of the same unique construct of SWB, are under-investigated. The purpose of this study was to examine the dimensionality and reliability of a single measure of SWB, which contained individual, community, and national levels across three Latin-American countries (Argentina, Chile, and Venezuela), using a bifactor model analysis. Findings showed that the bifactor model exhibited a good fit to the data for the three countries. However, invariance testing between countries was not fully supported because of each item's specific contribution to both specific and general constructs. The analyses of each country showed that the SWB construct was in a gray area between unidimensionality and multidimensionality; some factors contributed more to the general factor and others to the specific level, depending on the country. These findings call for integrating more distant levels (community and country levels) into the understanding of SWB at the individual level, as they contribute not only to an overall construct, but they make unique contributions to SWB, which must be considered in public policy making. De igual manera, la información recolectada permite identificar los procedimientos de apoyo al tratamiento de accidentes como una de las áreas de mejora en el marco de la atención de salud ocupacional.Ítem Criminal trajectory of women detained by the Chilean police (Carabineros) for crimes of domestic violence in 2007, and followed up to 2016(Universidad de Caldas, 2023) Valdivia-Devia, Mauricio; Oyanedel, Juan Carlos; Garrido González, José; Andrés-Pueyo, AntonioThe objective of this work is to identify the evolution of criminal behavior throughout the life of a group of 824 women detained by the Chilean police for crimes of domestic violence in 2007. The design is pseudo prospective longitudinal, which allows its follow-up through 9 years, as if it corresponded to a prospective longitudinal study. Any new detention or complaint against them between the years 2007 and 2016 was considered a recidivism. The 60.6% of women reoffended accumulating a total of 2,583 crimes. The criminal trajectories of this population extended well beyond the age of 30, generating an elongated age/crime curve, given that an important part of these women continued committing crimes until they were 40 years old, moving away from the traditional way that the age/crime curve acquires. © (2023). While most educational stakeholders adapt to the transition back to a “new normal”, it seems an obvious time for constructivist reflection on the lessons learned. The aim of this longitudinal inquiry was to examine the experiences of higher education learners in Chile during the pandemic for potential insights to be gained. The focus was on students in multi-disciplinarian fields and the changes to their perspectives, practices, and identities. Working within the qualitative paradigm, data was gathered using interviews (n=22), surveys (n=1,054, n=1,137, n=205) and field notes. Learners’ experiences were mapped against contemporary e-learning theory and 21st century learner identity goals. Through this lens, pedagogical practices, course designs, and uses of technology reflected in online spaces were found to influence learners and their learning in complex ways. Two key themes emerged in the analysis: (1) exposure to conventional pedagogy, information transfer and assessment-driven designs and technology challenges online, left students discouraged with their learning progress and disparaging of their future workplace preparedness and (2) students who experienced learner-centered practices online, supported by contemporary learning theory and community-building course designs and technologies, underwent transformative changes to their learning and identities and feeling confidently qualified for their post study careers. In view of the increasing role e-learning will play in this century, we believe further empirical research of this kind into a myriad of global, digital learning contexts, could help transform online learning and learners in our new post pandemic reality. © 2023 by authors; licensee CEDTECH by Bastas, CY.Ítem Editorial: Socio-psychological perspectives on collective behavior and social movements(Frontiers Media SA, 2023) Oyanedel, Juan Carlos; Espinosa, Agustin; Çakal, Huseyin; Paez, DarioThis Research Topic seeks to examine antecedents and effects of participation in collective behavior (CB) and social movements (SM). The scholars participating on it come from different regions of the world and examine different scenarios of political action and reasons for CB. Let's start for da Costa et al., whose systematic review helps outlining the field. The authors conclude that participation in CB and SMs was associated with conflict over resource allocation, intergroup dynamics, and realistic threats. Karataş et al. paper describes a reliable measure to study positive and negative intergroup contact between minority and majority ethnic youth, a relevant factor for understanding SM. Por tanto una vez identificada las diversas soluciones se planteará un modelo matemático capaz de determinar diversas configuraciones óptimas del sistema bajo diversas restricciones de costos.Ítem Mediation effect of emotional self-regulation in the relationship between physical activity and subjective well-being in Chilean adolescents(Nature Research, 2023-12) Fuentealba‑Urra, Sergio; Rubio, Andrés; González‑Carrasco, Mónica; Oyanedel, Juan Carlos; Céspedes‑Carreno, CristianAdolescents' subjective well-being and physical activity have been found to be correlated in previous studies. However, the underlying mechanisms of this relationship, especially the potential contribution of emotional self-regulation, have received little attention. This study aims to investigate the extent to which emotional self-regulation mediates the association between adolescent physical activity habits and their subjective well-being. The study involved 9585 adolescents who completed a cross-sectional survey. Participants were aged between 10 and 19 years old and attended primary and secondary schools in all 16 regions of Chile. The survey utilized a self-report questionnaire to measure physical activity habits, subjective well-being, and emotional self-regulation. Sociodemographic variables, such as age, gender, and socioeconomic level, were also considered in the analysis. The results showed that physical activity habits, emotional regulation, and subjective well-being were positively correlated. Among these factors, the strongest association was found between subjective well-being and emotional self-regulation. The mediation analysis revealed a partial mediation effect of emotional self-regulation between physical activity habits and subjective well-being. In other words, physical activity habits affect subjective well-being to the extent that these habits affect emotional self-regulation. These findings provide valuable insights into the mechanisms underlying the link between physical activity habits and subjective well-being among adolescents. They also offer useful information for the development of public programs and policies aimed at promoting physical activity habits and subjective well-being in young people.Ítem Perceived Collective School Efficacy Mediates the Organizational Justice Effect in Teachers’ Subjective Well-Being(MDPI, 2022-09) Herrera, Camilo; Torres-Vallejos, Javier; Martínez-Líbano, Jonathan; Rubio, Andrés; Céspedes, Cristian; Oyanedel, Juan Carlos; Acuña, Eduardo; Pedraza, DanaeTrust and team communication are central aspects for the achievement of both individual and common goals, which affect not only work efficiency but also the well-being of its members. In addition, organizational justice could affect these indicators, as well as the perception of collective efficacy within organizations, in this case, schools. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of organizational justice on teachers’ subjective well-being, and how this is affected/mediated by collective efficacy. We worked with a sample of 693 teachers across Chile. Multiple mediation analysis was carried out, where the latent variables of the study were estimated (subjective well-being, organizational justice, and two dimensions of collective efficacy). The results indicate that there is full mediation of the collective efficacy dimensions between the predictor–criterion relationship. Our findings allow us to hypothesize that perceptions of collective efficacy are central to explaining well-being as an intrinsic factor. © 2022 by the authors.Ítem Physical activity habits and their relationship with sociodemographic factors in Chilean adolescents(Frontiers Media S.A., 2022-08) Fuentealba-Urra, Sergio; Rubio, Andrés; Flores-Rivera, Carol; González-Carrasco, Mónica; Oyanedel, Juan Carlos; Castillo-Quezada, Humberto; Céspedes-Carreño, Cristian; Pacheco-Carrillo, JaimePhysical activity plays an important role in the well-being and development of adolescents. Physical activity habits expressed in terms of frequency and duration are consistently associated with sociodemographic factors such as age, gender, and socioeconomic status. However, there is less evidence of the relationship between the type and context of physical activity in adolescents. The aim of this article is to analyze physical activity habits and their relationship with sociodemographic factors in Chilean adolescents. The cross-sectional study consisted of 7,263 adolescents aged between 10 and 20 years old, students from both public and private schools in all regions of Chile. Physical activity habits were examined by means of a self-report questionnaire. The age groups were classified according to the three stages of adolescence (early: 10 to 13, middle: 14 to 16, and late: 17 to 20 years old). Socioeconomic level was established based on the school vulnerability index (SVI) of the school attended by each adolescent. In the study it was obvious to the level of physical activity for the adolescents was below the international recommendations. A statistically significant association can also be found between the sociodemographic factors studied and the physical activity habits reported by the young people. The multivariate regression analysis established that the risk of not achieving the physical activity recommendations was 2.8 times higher in females than in males, 2.4 times higher in the older age groups (14–16 and 17–20 years old) compared to the 10–13-year age range and 1.1 times in the medium and high vulnerability groups than in the low socioeconomic vulnerability group. These findings highlight the importance of considering all these factors holistically whenever designing programs or public policies that promote the development of healthy physical activity habits in adolescents. Discutimos la necesidad de abordar y destrabar estos nudos desde la investigación transdisciplinaria.Ítem Psychometric Properties and Measurement Invariance of The Fear of Missing Out Scale (FoMOs) In Chilean University Students(Publicacion de la Asociacion Salud, Ciencia y Tecnologia, 2023-01-01) Martínez-Libano, Jonathan; Torres-Vallejos, Javier; González Campusano, Nicol; Pereira Castillo, Javiera; Simkin, Hugo; Oyanedel, Juan Carlos; Yeomans, María-MercedesIntroduction: social networks can harm university students’ mental health; therefore, it is urgent to have valid instruments to measure new phenomena such as FoMO. Objective: this study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of the Fear of Missing Out Scale (FoMOs) in a sample of Chilean university students. Methods: confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) were carried out and estimated using the Weighted Leasts Square Means and Variance (WLSMV). Results: the FoMOs evaluation had an internal consistency of 0,863 (Cronbach’s Alpha). The confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) showed two factors and good indicators: CFI = 0,991, TLI = 0,987, and an RMSEA of 0,054. Conclusion: the FoMOs is a good instrument for measuring the fear of missing out in the Chilean University population.Ítem Psychometric Properties of the Social Media Addiction Scale (SMAS) on Chilean University Students(Editorial Salud, Ciencia y Tecnologia, 2023) Martínez-Líbano, Jonathan; González Campusano, Nicole; Pereira Castillo, Javiera; Oyanedel, Juan Carlos; Yeomans-Cabrera, María-MercedesIntroduction: the use and abuse of social networks are harming the mental health of university students. Objective: to adapt and validate the Social Media Addiction Scale (SMAS) for the Chilean context to have a reliable instrument to measure addiction to social networks. The sample comprised 686 university students (mean age=28,04, SD=8,4), 71,1 % female, 28,4 % male, and 0,5 % other genders. Methods: confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) using the weighted least squares means and variances method (WLSMV) was used for this study. Results: reliability was Cronbach’s alpha α=0,841. The SMAS yielded two factors that explained 53,433 % of the variance. The CFA yielded very good fit indicators such as CFI=0,959, TLI=0,949, and RMSEA=0,060. Conclusions: based on the results described above, we can affirm that the SMAS is a good instrument to measure social network addiction in college students. © 2023; Los autores.Ítem Subjective well-being and its intrinsic and extrinsic motivational correlates in high performance executives: A study in Chilean managers empirically revisiting the bifactor model(MDPI, 2021-08-01) Pradenas, Daniela; Oyanedel, Juan Carlos; da Costa, Silvia; Rubio, Andrés; Páez, DarioThis study analyzes the relationship between work satisfaction, family satisfaction, and general well-being in high performance managers in Santiago, Chile. The importance of the satisfaction of intrinsic and extrinsic needs and motivations was examined to advance in the development of a positive organizational psychology, which investigates the factors that reinforce well-being. Seventy-five executives from large and medium-sized companies were surveyed and 8 in-depth interviews were carried out. The main predictors of well-being are, from family satisfaction, the family’s ability to cope with stress and, from work satisfaction, extrinsic aspects such as material conditions of the job and stability, and intrinsic aspects such as recognition and the ability to organize one’s own work. The more general regression model shows that extrinsic job and family satisfaction predict general well-being, not intrinsic satisfaction. The results are discussed in the framework of classical models of motivation, such as Herzberg’s, their relationship to Deci and Ryan’s self-determination theory, and the current study of well-being in organizations. © 2021 by the authors. The survey was originally distributed to 5435 teachers. The survey was developed with an aim of exploring teachers’ beliefs about how second language grammar should be taught. The survey consisted of 50 items in total, in four sections: (a) background information (10 items), (b) beliefs regarding L2 learning and teaching (9 items), (c) beliefs regarding grammar instruction (23 items), and (d) classroom realities (8 items). Except for the background information section, the items took the form of a 6-point Likert scale. The entire dataset is included in an Excel file (.xlsx). The entire questionnaire is included as a supplementary file. The data is connected to the theoretical models proposed in [1]. In [1], those models were proposed based on descriptive statistics (e.g., agreement/ disagreement rates) and focus-group interview data. Subsequently, in the current paper, the data was submitted to structural equation modelling to explain the theoretical models. Then, the data is visually depicted with figures created via AMOS. © 2019 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Inc. A particular focus was given to demotivators and their impact on TM and burnout. The impact of COVID-19 was considered. Given that EFL teachers tend to be second language (L2) learners of English themselves, the study also investigated how TM and L2 motivation interact with each other. The participants were 154 school-level teachers with a range of backgrounds (teaching experience, geographic areas, and school sectors). In the questionnaire, four scales were included: (a) autonomous motivation for teaching; (b) demotivators; (c) perceived burnout; and (d) L2 motivation. Fifteen teachers were interviewed in order to triangulate the survey results. Structural equation modeling showed that TM negatively predicted perceived burnout, suggesting that it can counter teachers’ emotional exhaustion and their perceived lack of personal accomplishment. Demotivators predicted TM positively, albeit weakly. L2 motivation was found to be only weakly related to TM. Qualitative findings indicated that teaching experience mediated the role that demotivators played in relation to TM. Experienced teachers, especially those who held intrinsic motivation to teach, channeled the impact of demotivators, including those relating to the pandemic, to a positive motivational force to teach. The study implies the importance of considering teachers as agents and devising an educational system in which their mental health is prioritized. To address this problem, it is fundamental to understand pro-environmental behaviors in the population, as well as the factors that determine them. There are, however, very few studies conducted in Latin America that are focused in understanding the environmental behavior of its citizens. The main goal of this research was to study the environmental behaviors of a Chilean community and identify the factors that determine them. To that end, a diverse set of environmental behaviors (power and water conservation, environmentally-aware consumer behavior, biodiversity protection, rational automobile use and ecological waste management) and sociodemographic and attitudinal factors-based on the VBN model-were evaluated. Survey data was obtained from a statistically representative sample (N = 1537) in Santiago, Chile. Our results suggest that several participants displayed tendencies that favor more responsible environmental behaviors, with high environmental concern, and demonstrating their ample awareness of the consequences of failing to protect the environment. Nevertheless, the highest average scores of environmental behavior were related to low cost behaviors and those that imposed the fewest behavioral restrictions. In global terms, we concluded that the youngest subjects in the lowest socioeconomic group obtained the lowest scores across the pro-environmental behavior spectrum. © 2015 by the authors.Ítem Well-Being and Entrepreneurship Intention: An Empirical Study of New Perspectives(MDPI, 2022-04-01) Contreras-Barraza, Nicolás; Acuña-Duran, Eduardo; Oyanedel, Juan Carlos; Salazar-Sepúlveda, Guido; Vega-Muñoz, Alejandro; Ariza-Montes, AntonioThe research aims to examine the relationships between the constructs of entrepreneurial intention according to the theory of planned behavior (TPB) model and subjective well-being (SW). The model used considers the works proposed by Liñán and Chen and Oyanedel, Vargas, and Paez, and a questionnaire was applied to 1043 people in an urban population of the three main regions of Chile using multivariate statistical methods for its analysis (structural equation models). The proposed hypotheses are that subjective well-being towards entrepreneurship has a direct and positive effect on entrepreneurial intention (H1), personal attitude towards entrepreneurship has a direct and positive effect on entrepreneurial intention (H2), perceived behavioral control towards entrepreneurship has a direct and positive effect on entrepreneurial intention (H3), and subjective norm towards entrepreneurship has a direct and positive effect on entrepreneurial intention (H4). The results indicate that subjective well-being on entrepreneurial intention shows indirect effects mediated by subjective norm, contributing to the theoretical development concerning well-being incidence on entrepreneurial behavior, providing theoretical elements that can serve as a basis for further strengthening the understanding of the relationships between personal well-being, economic growth, and the harmonious relationship with the environment. © 2022 by the authors.
