Ítem The relationship between L1 and L2 reading attitudes in EFL primary school learners(Universidad Andrés Bello, 2020) Ubilla Herrera, Katherine; Cancino Ávila, Marco Octavio; Facultad de Educación y Ciencias SocialesThis study investigated the relationship between L1 and L2 reading attitudes in EFL primary school learners, and the variables that could explain the differences in their attitudes such as age, gender and the domain of L2. The participants were 65 Chilean primary school EFL students (25 girls, 40 boys) who were between 8 and 12 years old (M = 10, SD = 1.41). Their L1 and L2 reading attitudes were measured using a Likert scale the Elementary Reading Survey, and their L2 proficiency was measured using the TOEFL Primary test to determine the interaction of English proficiency in the students' reading attitudes. Data were analysed by employing descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. The study found that the students’ L1 and L2 reading attitudes correlations were moderate ranged from r = ,31 (L1 Total Reading Attitudes and L2 Total Reading Attitudes). Moreover, no evidence was found that the contribution of age and gender; only an interaction effect (Age*Gender) was found for the L1 recreational reading component in female learners. Thus, the study showed that reading attitudes are related to L1 and L2, and that there is no impact of demographic variables on reading attitudes.
