Isotemporal substitution of sedentary time with different physical activity intensities and sleep in obesity parameters across eight latin American countries
(Nature Research, 0025-12) de Victo, Eduardo Rossato; Sales, Diego; Christofaro, Diego G. D.; Fisberg, Mauro d; Kovalskys, Irina; del Val Martín, Pablo; Ferrari, Gerson
This study aimed to examine the associations between substituting sedentary time (ST) with physical activity and sleep with obesity parameters in adults from eight Latin American countries. The sample consisted of 2173 adults aged 18–65 years. Physical activity, ST and sleep were objectively measured using accelerometers. The parameters of obesity were defined using body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC). Regression analyses were conducted for isotemporal analysis of the association between substituting 30 min/day of ST with light physical activity (LPA), moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and sleep in relation to BMI and WC. Substituting light physical activity with higher intensity was also analyzed. Substituting 30 min/day of ST with MVPA was significantly associated with lower odds of a higher BMI (OR: 0.993, 95%CI 0.990–0.998) and WC (OR: 0.998, 95%CI 0.998–0.999). Conversely, substituting ST with LPA did not show a significant impact on obesity parameters. However, the substitution of 30 min/day of LPA with MVPA was also associated with lower odds of a higher BMI (OR: 0.993, 95%CI 0.989–0.997). The results highlight the importance of replacing ST and increasing the intensity of physical activity as an effective strategy for preventing and managing obesity in Latin America.

Pedagogical, methodological and didactic bases applied to teaching handball: A literary review (2017-2022)
(2023) Espoz-Lazo, Sebastián; Hinojosa-Torres, Claudio; Farías-Valenzuela, Claudio; Giakoni-Ramírez, Frano; del Val Martín, Pablo; Valdivia-Moral, Pedro
Pedagogy, methodology, and didactics are fundamental in the development of handball because they promote the integral formation of individuals through multi-variable practices that are effective for the acquisition of technical-tactical skills. However, most studies on handball focus on performance, injury prevention, and match analysis. Therefore, the aim of this work is to identify, consolidate, analyze, and describe the methodological, pedagogical, and didactic strategies used in the training of handball. A search was carried out in WoS following the PRISMA guidelines, including articles from 2017 to 2022 in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, including only research in social and educational sciences. Articles examining the effectiveness of teaching and learning in handball and technical and tactical training methods such as methodological designs were selected, excluding other types of documents. Of the 19 selected documents, most are published in English and are carried out mainly in Brazil and Spain. These are divided into three categories: training processes, evaluation, and use of methodological instruments. The results show significant differences in the methods used. It is concluded that research on the methodology, didactics, and pedagogy applied to the teaching and training of handball is little explored. Most of the reviewed studies have been carried out in Brazil and Spain using the handball elite as research subjects, suggesting that there are other populations that could benefit from methodological, didactic, and pedagogical alternatives adapted to their contexts and realities. © Copyright 2023:

Perceptions of University Academics about the School Curriculum for Undergraduate Application, Chile
(Cosmos Scholars Publishing House, 2023-06) Arriagada Hernández, Carlos Roberto; Duclos-Bastías, Daniel; del Val Martín, Pablo; Fuentes Vilugrón, Gerardo
The interest arises due to the fact that educational policies and regulations such as the Framework for Good Teaching, undergraduate pedagogical standards and curricular updating, have triggered new scenarios of teaching performance, so it is important to contribute with an updated basis of this type of knowledge to contribute to the development of undergraduate education and its future teaching development in the school system. The methodology to be used considering the nature of the study is the comprehensive-interpretative paradigm, qualitative approach, the type of study was through a case study, with the use of data collection techniques of semi-structured open interviews. For the analysis of the data, the software Atlas. Results and discussion of this research are the positive valuation of the school curriculum and the integral development of knowledge, skills and attitudes, but they are not consistent at the moment of transferring to the student how to develop them in a theoretical-practical way, which makes glimpse complex scenarios that raise the reflection towards the complexity of integral learning, and how the undergraduate student, future teacher can develop his teaching actions placing himself from this type of learning in the school.

Physical Activity in Immersive Virtual Reality: A Scoping Review
(MDPI, 2023-06) Giakoni-Ramírez, Frano; Godoy-Cumillaf, Andrés; Espoz-Lazo, Sebastián; Duclos-Bastias, Daniel; del Val Martín, Pablo
Physical activity has benefits for health, but many adolescents are inactive. However, video games such as Immersive Virtual Reality (IVR) have grown in popularity as a leisure activity among young people, allowing them to manipulate objects in virtual environments increasing the practice of physical activity. The evidence indicates that the interest in physical activity through IVR is greater than in traditional methods, and different experiences have been reported. However, few studies indicate the sample evaluated, the effects found, or the IVR instruments used. Due to this, is the aim of this study is to identify the publications referring to IVR and physical activity, characterize them, and present the obtained main findings. For this, the guidelines described in the PRISMA-ScR for scoping reviews were applied. After the use of the inclusion and exclusion criteria, eight articles were included. Results show evidence regarding physiological outcomes, perceptual variables, interest and enjoyment, and psychological effects regarding physical activity through IVR. Additionally, the use of different devices and their prescriptions are explored. It is concluded that there is interest from the scientific community for the practice of physical activity through IVR, as well as for its application for the maintenance of active habits. This is important as it positions IVR as a method that can be a more experiential and effective way to develop and maintain a healthy lifestyle. © 2023 by the authors.

(Federacion Espanola de Docentes de Educacion Fisica, 2023) del Val Martín, Pablo; Giakoni-Ramírez, Frano; Figueroa, Giovanni Carozzi; Molina López, Victor; Soto Meneses, Javiera; Campos Torrealba, Alfredo; Ortiz Marholz, Paula; Espoz-Lazo, Sebastián
The present study investigated the scientific production in Chilean Physical Education during the period 2018-2022. A bibliographic review has been performed by following the guidelines from PRISMA declaration. The Scopus database was used to find the scientific articles according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The search yielded 462 articles when the keywords were entered. However, once the exclusion criteria were applied, the number was reduced to 22 articles. After reviewing those documents that explicitly alluded to interventions in the field of school PE, those whose purpose was documentary or bibliographic were excluded, leaving the final number of selected articles selected as 16. After the analysis of the articles found, it is concluded that it is necessary to increase the academic productivity of Chile in the field of school interventions in Physical Education, given that most of the research addressed other educational stages or, failing that, was not focused on school development. © Copyright: Federación Española de Asociaciones de Docentes de Educación Física (FEADEF).

The Impact of Physical/Natural Spaces on the Mental and Emotional Well-Being of Students According to the Report of Rural Female Teachers
(Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), 2025-03) Fuentes-Vilugrón, Gerardo; Caamaño-Navarrete, Felipe; Riquelme-Mella, Enrique; Godoy Rojas, Ingrid; Saavedra-Vallejos, Esteban; del Val Martín, Pablo; Muñoz-Troncoso, Flavio; Arriagada-Hernández, Carlos
In rural schools, nature is a space where teachers and students seek to feel states of emotional well-being. Activities carried out in contact with nature could be considered ideal for learning. The objective of the research was to explore the influence of physical/natural spaces on the emotional well-being of schoolchildren as reported by female teachers working in rural and indigenous contexts in the region of La Araucanía, Chile. This research is based on the hermeneutic paradigm with a case study design. The selection of participants was non-probabilistic and intentional, including 15 female teachers working in rural school contexts. The study used a semi-structured interview format, and the data were analyzed using grounded theory. According to the teachers’ discourse, the results generated three categories: (a) culture and diversity, (b) physical/natural spaces, and (c) emotional well-being. These show that natural spaces positively affect learning processes and emotional regulation. The research suggests that encouraging contact with physical/natural spaces can help create classroom climates with lower levels of conflict and tension. This, in turn, leads to higher levels of physical, psychological/mental, social, and spiritual balance, resulting in improved attitudes and motivational processes towards learning by students and teachers in rural and indigenous contexts. © 2025 by the authors.

Trends in Physical Activity Research on Tobacco and/or Alcohol: A Bibliometric Analysis
(Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), 0025) Castillo-Paredes, Antonio; del Val Martín, Pablo; Ferrari, Gerson
Background/Objectives: Physical activity allows the enjoyment of personal health benefits in those who practice it, including the possibility of modifying behavioral risk factors such as tobacco and alcohol consumption. These risk factors are responsible for the development of non-communicable diseases, which are preventable and controllable. The scientific field on this object of study has grown in recent years. The main objective of this study was to perform a scientific mapping to explore the trend of annual publications, and to analyze and identify the thematic categories, the authors, countries and journals with the highest number of papers, the most referenced papers and authors, and the most used keywords in research related to physical activity and tobacco and/or alcohol consumption. Methods: Through a bibliometric analysis based on traditional bibliometric laws on the scientific documentation related to the subject and indexed in the Main Collection of the Web of Science. The DeSolla Price Law was used to analyze the trend of annual publications, using the coefficient of determination R2. Lotka’s law was applied to identify prolific authors, Bradford’s law to highlight the most frequent publication sources, the h-index to identify the most cited articles and Zipf’s law to highlight the keywords most used in research. Results: A total of 538 documents were analyzed. The trend followed by annual publications is in an exponential growth phase. Adrian Taylor and Michael Ussher were identified as prolific authors. USA and Preventive Medicine were the country and journal with the highest number of publications. The most frequently used words were physical activity, smoking, exercise, alcohol, obesity, and smoking cessation. Conclusions: This bibliometric review identified an exponential growth from 1994 to date of research related to physical activity and tobacco and/or alcohol consumption. It allowed us to identify trends and guide the development of future research in these or new related areas. © 2025 by the authors.
