Ítem Impact of scaffolded instruction on learners' writing quality in english as a foreign language(Universidad Andrés Bello, 2013) Coleman Mancini, Crystal; Veas Faúndez, Candy; Facultad de Humanidades y EducaciónThe present study attempts to investigate to what extent different levels of scaffolded instruction in L2 writing affect learners’ writing quality in English as a Foreign Language. Thus, Vygotsky's (1978) sociocultural framework of the zone of proximal development (ZPD) and the six actions of scaffolding techniques (Wood, Bruner, and Ross, 1976) which are (1) recruitment, (2) reduction in degrees of freedom, (3) direction maintenance, (4) making critical features, (5) frustration control, and (6) demonstration. The concepts above mention are used as the theoretical basis to study the development of second language writing. A course project is presented in which second young language learners became authors and editors in order to produce a newsletter for an authentic audience. The learners were divided into three groups who were exposed to different levels of scaffolding techniques: high, medium, and low scaffolding. Quantitative and qualitative results revealed that the high and medium scaffolding learners demonstrated an important improvement in their quality of writing: increasing the amount of connectors use, correct sentences and the total of sentences. In all, the results confirmed a movement within the medium scaffolding learners’ zone of proximal development, gaining more awareness of the sentences and plot structure and noticing the plot requirements for a narration.
