Ítem L2 Listening comprehension from captioned videos and student's perception on video : a pilot study(Universidad Andrés Bello, 2012) Cotroneo, Patricia; Muñoz, Lesly; Norambuena, Alejandra; Olguín, Paulina; Parés, Daniela; Facultad de Humanidades y Educación; Escuela de EducaciónThe present study investigates the effect of input modality (video, audio, and captions, ¡.e., on-screen text in the same language as audio) on (a) attention to input, and (b) help of captions in listening comprehension of intermediate L2 learners. Sixteen sixth-semester learners of English Pedagogy participated in the experimental session. Group one (N=8) saw a video with audio and captions (EG), group two (N=8) saw a video with audio (CG). All participants completed a demographic survey, a perception questionnaire and a recall protocol. The outcomes exposes that the Experimental Group (EG) paid more attention to the images while watching the video than the Control Group (CG). Results from the perception questionnaire suggest that participants were lead to pay more attention to the images because of the captions, thus leaving audio in second place in terms of priority. The group with captions (EG) scored a bit higher on their written recall protocols than the group without captions (CG), forcing investigators to infer that students' proficiency level affected the results. Pedagogical implications of this investigation are that full captioned videos combined with inconsistent images can distract rather than help learners in their L2 listening comprehension skills. However, more appropriate images can be quite useful without producing a cognitive overload.
