Even though it has been more than a decade of teaching English as a foreign language, it was within the last five years that the government decided to pay attention as it deserves; a useful tool for people to communicate with others in this globalized world. Now, there is an important test for students called SIMCE in which if students get a high score they can obtain a certificate that shows their level of English language. Nonetheless, the learning process of it has been quite difficult. The acquisition of its grammar is one of the most difficult things for students to master. That is why we decided to implement a different methodology for students which was called Student Centered Approach to teach English grammar to seventh graders at a state-owned school by using multimedia applications. Nevertheless, it was not the only thing we implemented. We also used technological tools inside our lessons to help the learning process of the students.Ítem Implementation of a mentorship on the english communicative performance within a group of accounting students belonging to the english general program at a private university(Universidad Andrés Bello, 2013) Antezana, Alejandro; Parada, Carlos; Mejías, Ignacio; Soto, Gerardo; Orrego, Roxana; Facultad de Humanidades y EducaciónThis thesis project examines the impact of implementing a mentorship on a group of Contador Auditor (from now on Accounting) students that belong to the English General Program at a priva te university. These students ha ve different problems in terms of their development of the four English language skills and also in their communicative performance. One of the main ideas in this project is to measure if a mentorship program is able to overcome these problems to a certain extent and to improve their English level. Regarding the methodological context of this project, researchers decided to support their arguments using a mixed method design which allows them to interpret data from two perspectives; qualitative and quantitative. Before working on the project design, a research was done to find other projects that could share similar purposes; two projects, Mentoring Project in the Polytechnic University of Madrid in Spain and Perceptions of Mentors and Schemes Participating in an English Language Mentoring Scheme ata University in Hong Kong in China, were found and they helped researchers to gather general information on how a mentoring program should be done and to foresee problems that could be experienced during the process. Later on, different mentoring models were studied and used, which allowed students to experience different learning procedures. At the beginning of the intervention , there was a need for checking students' English level and for this, students sat for a diagnostic test that measured their performance on the four English language skills (speaking, reading, listening, and writing). The analysis at the end of this project showed that, students from the Accounting Major ata private university began to improve their results in the target language once the mentoring program started.Ítem Improving students' motivation within an ESP program for dentistry majors at a private university.(Universidad Andrés Bello, 2010) Hernández Bravo, Javiera; Leiva Díaz, Christian; Niño de Zepeda Jiménez, Carla; Peña Serrano, César; Orrego, Roxana; Facultad de Educación y Ciencias SocialesThis is an exploratory and descriptive study based on the area well known as English for Specific Purposes (hereafter ESP) whose objective was to find out whether the design and selection of authentic materials for Dentistry purposes had a positive effect on a group of dentistry students' motivation at a prívate university. To carry out this investigation, a needs analysis questionnaire was designed and applied to Dentistry students and in-the-use English program was analyzed. Afterwards, two units from the book English in Medicine (CUP) were selected and adapted into dentistry field taking into consideration the results obtained from the needs analysis questionnaire previously applied to students. Consequently, authentic materials from dentistry area were selected and they were included in both units with communicative purposes in order to foster the four linguistic abilities (receptive and productive). Both units were piloted with the students as well. At the end of the piloting stage, they answered a motivation survey to discover if the designed pedagogical materials had a positive consequence on the them. The results obtained show that students positively evaluated the units they learned and their motivation was also increased because the materials used were based on students' specialization area.Ítem Teaching EFL by means of a Student-Centered Approach: An experimental Study(Universidad Andrés Bello, 2013) Coello, Lucía; D'ardaillon, Michelle; Díaz, Valentina; León, Ingar; Roca, Natalia; Sinclair, María Eugenia; Orrego, Roxana; Facultad de Humanidades y EducaciónThe research consisted of selecting two different schools. The two of them recognized as one Private and Subsidized; both located in Santiago the Chile. This study was looking forward to gather information and results of the implementation of a methodology called "Student-Centered Approach." This approach has been used for severa! developed countries to achieve excellence in education and that is why the objective of this study was to prove the possibility and non-possibility of inserting it into the Chilean educational system. Two eighth grades-with a quantity of students not less than fifteen nor exceeding- thirty-were divided into halfs. These eighth graders took different roles; the group in charge of the teacher hired by the school was called the control group while the group in charge of the researchers involved was the experimental group that were the ones that yield final results. lt should be noted that the intervention lasted one month in which, four interventions were applied. One intervention per week and immediately comments and results were extracted. lt should be highlighted, that a pre-test was applied before the experiment started. At the end of the student's month intervention, a post-test was-done to validate the effectiveness of this new methodology which turned out to be positively. The students also answered an anonymous questionnaire in which they were able to comment on the experience they had during the thirty one days. lt needs to be remarked that this questionnaire was done only to the experimental group.
