The objective of this strategic plan is to develop a business model for the treatment and pricing of tailings in the mining industry. While waste ore deposits exist around the world, the scope of this work will be at the national level as information on this topic exists and mining in Chile is the world standard. This business model should help identify possible solutions, their scale, key variables and the economic model that will allow stakeholders to benefit from them. The methodology used in this study is divided into four steps. In the first step, an analysis of the mining industry is performed, showing the need and importance of waste treatment, the applicable constraints and the associated business opportunities. In the second step, it will study and detail how the value of this proposal will be delivered in the operation of the business. Then, a concrete case is taken to illustrate the commercial opportunities and gains, outlining the steps necessary to present a compelling bid. Here, details are also examined to perform the specific extraction and processing of each case, giving key variables to consider such as investment, revenues and expenses. Finally, an economic model was presented in the case studied to learn about profitability indicators and draw conclusions. This business model is based on the ability to service copper ores due to their age and turn them into profitable mines today. Disposal is done by a specialized company that conducts research, investment and mining. Revenues come from the sale of copper and possibly other metals. The contractual relationship between the tailings owner and the treating company determines how both parties benefit from this activity: it is proposed that the proceeds of the treatment process remain the property of the tailings owner and the margin should be agreed between the sale price and the treating company's cost to be divided between the parties through a distribution factor to be agreed on a case-by-case basis.
