La dificultad de encontrar tiempo para sí : la temporalidad de las redes sociales y sus implicancias cotidianas : una indagación cualitativa en jóvenes universitarios chilenos

Las redes sociales han transformado la forma en la que nos comunicamos, interactuamos, compartimos información y consumimos, en definitiva, han reconfigurado la forma en la que nos relacionamos con otros y con el mundo, tanto a nivel local como global. La preocupación sobre el uso de redes sociales está suscitando un interés cada vez creciente respecto de sus potenciales
consecuencias en diversos ámbitos y desde diversas disciplinas. La sociología particularmente no ha prestado la suficiente atención a estas problemáticas, subestimando el rol contemporáneo de las tecnologías en la configuración de nuestras sociedades. Ante la contradicción identificada por múltiples autores entre la evolución tecnológica y la sensación dominante de carencia de tiempo, esta investigación se centra en dos cuestiones. La primera de orden explícito se dirige a problematizar el uso de las redes sociales en jóvenes universitarios chilenos desde una propia sociología del tiempo. La segunda de un orden más bien implícito se orienta a compensar un cierto vacío presente en los estudios sobre el tiempo en Chile. Todo bajo el marco que ve en las sociedades aceleradas grandes tensiones psicosociales.
Frente a la tendencia a estudiar el tiempo en su dimensión de reloj y contribuir a problematizar las redes sociales en la vida cotidiana, el presente trabajo se propone caracterizar la temporalidad de las redes sociales y sus implicancias cotidianas para jóvenes universitarios chilenos. Para esto se planearon como objetivos indagar los usos de las redes sociales y su relación con otras esferas de actividad, explorar las perspectivas temporales de las y los jóvenes respecto de su cotidianidad para finalmente reconstruir las críticas presentes en los discursos de las y los estudiantes. Desde una metodología cualitativa, se realizaron un total de 9 entrevistas semi estructuradas, distinguiendo entre
hombres y mujeres y nivel de participación en redes sociales. La información resultante fue posteriormente procesada siguiendo la lógica del análisis sociológico del discurso.
Los resultados dan cuenta de que la temporalidad de las redes sociales es principalmente imperativa e intempestiva. Las y los jóvenes universitarios experimentan las redes sociales como normalizadas y ubicuas, sin embargo, estas atentan tanto con la distribución ideales de sus tiempos como con los
tiempos considerados valiosos. Se permite hablar, por tanto, de que las redes sociales operan como un régimen temporal, pues contienen una temporalidad que le es propia, independiente del nivel de participación de cada estudiante. De esta manera, el tiempo dedicado a las redes sociales constituye diversas tensiones en la vida cotidiana y terminan afectando negativamente a las y los estudiantes. Se destaca que las y los jóvenes critican ciertos aspectos de las redes sociales y se contrasta con ideales de buena vida. Finalmente, se reflexiona en torno a poder distraerse y desconectarse de las redes sociales más que en las redes sociales.
Social networks have transformed the way in which we communicate, interact, share information and consume; in short, they have reshaped the way in which we relate to others and to the world, both locally and globally. Concern about the use of social networks is giving rise to increasing interest in their potential consequences in a variety of fields and from a variety of disciplines. Sociology in particular has not paid enough attention to these issues, underestimating the contemporary role of technologies in shaping our societies. Faced with the contradiction identified by multiple authors between technological evolution and the dominant feeling of lack of time, this research focuses on two issues. The first of an explicit order is aimed at problematizing the use of social networks in young Chilean university students from a sociology of time itself. The second of a rather implicit order is oriented to compensate for a certain void present in the studies on time in Chile. All under the framework that sees in accelerated societies great psychosocial tensions. Faced with the tendency to study time in its clock dimension and to contribute to problematize social networks in everyday life, this paper aims to characterize the temporality of social networks and their daily implications for young Chilean university students. The objectives were to investigate the uses of social networks and their relationship with other spheres of activity, to explore the temporal perspectives of young people regarding their daily life and finally to reconstruct the criticisms present in the students' discourses. From a qualitative methodology, a total of 9 semi-structured interviews were conducted, distinguishing between men and women and level of participation in social networks. The resulting information was subsequently processed following the logic of sociological discourse analysis. The results show that the temporality of social networks is mainly imperative and untimely. Young university students experience social networks as normalized and ubiquitous; however, they threaten both the ideal distribution of their time and the time considered valuable. It is possible to speak, therefore, that social networks operate as a temporal regime, since they contain a temporality that is their own, independent of the level of participation of each student. Thus, the time dedicated to social networks constitutes various tensions in daily life and ends up negatively affecting the students. It is emphasized that young people criticize certain aspects of social networks and contrast them with ideals of a good life.
