Abstract
Due to the high demand of being in touch with the undeveloped wilderness, Wild Protected Areas have been set up. Those areas are providing a wide variety of paths and trails which many times do not accomplish the specific objectives they were designed to. Considering that, it is necessary to know some sustainability criteria and indicators which will allow us to evaluate the real state of those trails and, on account of those results to design or redesign new alternatives to fully exploit the resources and the use of them. To accomplish this, we propose a three-step methodology: to compile the information to set a diagnosis of the studied area; to carry on an evaluation and finally design the specific trail. In this case, we chose the "Paso Desolación" trail, located at the Vicente Perez Rosales National Park. This trail has the ideal characteristics for this research as it was designed following an old skinner path. The main characteristic of it is its outstanding surrounding which can be appreciated all the way around. No matter this attractive aspect which enrich your hike, it doesn't provide some important information like: the incorrect or nule design of the trail, the lack of signage through out the footpath, no boards to spot the plentiful wildlife or areas of interest and the scarce control of the guards in the area (no trail administration). All in all, contribute to the rapid erosion of the environment and make it more difficult for the visitors to enjoy in full.
