This study aimed to identify the factors that motivate the learning of English language in students who are about to complete their secondary education and how beneficial they think it would be for their professional, academic and personal future life. For this, an investigation under the guidance of the positivist paradigm, also known as quantitative paradigm, was carried out. Students belonging to two schools, one in Chile and the other one in Germany answered a questionnaire which included the following domains: professional, academic and personal. The outcomes obtained were compared considering the social context of both countries. This study also discusses the great impact that motivation has in the English learning process as a foreign language and it determines whether students are intrinsically or extrinsically motivated. The analysis of the results reveals that there is a clear difference between the interests that the adolescents of both nations have regarding language learning. In conclusion, it is important to consider language learning motivation together with contextual factors, since the information of these two factors can be used to improve the curriculum development.es
