The effects of standardized commercial and authentic oral and written materials in adult chilean language learners' motivation and progress

dc.description.abstractThls study explores the attltudes and effects of standardized commercial materials and authentic materials on adult professlonal Chilean English language leamers. Ten female Chilean professional subjects with various levels of Englísh whose ages ranged between 30 and 58 years of age partícipated in the 8-month study. Subjects had to have previous English courses in their formal education or in language institutes. AII particlpants were exposed to authentic and contrived written and oral texts during their English course. Three surveys were administered to investigate participants' attitudes and experiences with materials in the ELT classroom. Subjects received a befare survey designed to explore their previous experiences with the Target Language as well as materials and also during and post surveys designad to explore thelr attitudes about the materials after being exposed to them. Results indicate that subjects found authentic materials to be more challenglng, useful and engaglng that contrived materials. Participants also lndicated that contrived materials were more comprehensible than authentic materials. Subjects also reported that authentic materials preparad them better to understand the Target Language and Target Culture in real life sítuations such as meetings, seminars, and traveling. The study concludes that authentic materials positively affect the learning process of Chilean adult professional language learners.
