En su oficio de dramaturgo, William Shakespeare trabajó
frecuentemente con la noción de espacio, pero ¿cómo logró
configurarlo y representarlo en el escenario vacío de El Globo,
en la corte, o en la sala privada de Blackfriars? ¿Cómo creó ese
sentido de espacio y de lugar en un texto con escasas acotaciones?
Tomando como caso de estudio La tempestad, analizaré el modo en
que Shakespeare comunica el sentido de espacio sobre el escenario
y a lo largo del texto para argumentar que la configuración shakespeariana de este no obedece solo a convenciones dramáticas
de la época isabelina, sino al uso de un lenguaje visual y sensorial
puesto en movimiento por los actores, y a las condiciones de
representación de los teatros londinenses; específicamente, a la
performatividad y flexibilidad del espacio vacío.
In his profession of playwright, William Shakespeare frequently worked with the notion of space, but how did he manage to configure and represent it on the empty stage of the Globe theatre, at court, or at the Blackfriars private playhouse? How did he create that sense of space and place in a script with very few stage directions? Taking The Tempest as a case study, I will analyze the way in which Shakespeare communicates the sense of space onstage and throughout the script, to argue that his configuration does not only obey to the dramatic conventions of the Elizabethan era, but to the use of visual and sensory language set in motion by the actors, and the conditions of representation of the London theatres; specifically, to the performativity and flexibility of the empty space.
