Examining 6th and 7th grade learner's perceptions of task-based language teaching: a case study

Abstract

This study aims to examine the perception of elementary students towards taskbased language teaching. Forty students from two different schools, twenty from Colegio Alborada del Mar and twenty from Colegio Nuestra Señora del Huerto, were exposed to an hour and half of three different tasks. The first task was an information-gap task, the second one was a reasoning-gap task and the third one was an opinion-gap task. Throughout the three tasks students were given a perception survey where they were told to consider these three elements; enjoyment, usefulness and participation. The study finding showed that 6th and 7th grade students would well receive the task-based approach to language teaching and would like to include it in their everyday classes.

Este proyecto de investigación tiene como objetivo examinar la percepción de estudiantes de básica basada en el método de TBLT (Enseñanza de Lenguas Basada en Tareas). Cuarenta estudiantes de dos distintos colegios, veinte del Colegio Alborada del Mar y veinte del Colegio Nuestra Señora del Huerto, fueron expuestos a una clase de una hora y media con tres tareas distintas. La primera tarea fue de intercambio de información, la segunda una tarea de razonamiento, y la tercera de una tarea de opinión. A lo largo de las tres tareas a los estudiantes se les entregó una encuesta de percepción hacia las tareas donde se les dijo que consideraran tres elementos: disfrute, utilidad y participación. El proyecto de investigación mostró que los estudiantes de 6to y 7° básico recibirían bien el método de TBLT y les gustaría que fuera incluido en sus clases diarias.
