This research has a positive, quantitative approach and its objective is to determine the activation of background knowledge in L1 and its incidence on L2 reading comprehension. Two groups of 12 students each (L1 and L2) are part of the study. The students belong to a private school in the city of ViƱa del Mar, Chile. By means of test, results are launched and analyzed from a descriptive statistics approach with graphics. The reason that triggered this study is the deficiency observed in reading comprehension of L2 (English). That has is why, this investigation demonstrates the influence that background (previous) knowledge of L1 (Spanish) has on the reading comprehension in L2 (English). There are also studied some strategies of background knowledge activation in L1. Posing that these strategies from L1 are transferred to L2 (Koda, 2009). Then, the study moves towards to the theory, defining the key concepts of the study: the definition of L1 and L2, reading comprehension, background knowledge, reading comprehension strategies, activation of background knowledge strategies and reading in L1 and L2.The methodology of the research is formulated from the positivism theory and it is worked from the quantitative Then the results are analyzed for reaching a conclusion.
